The Academy's 2015-2016 Black History program revealed the theme of "Deep Roots, Broad Branches, Bright Future." The importance of Black History lies in its ability to educate, inspire and uplift all people of African descent, and to enlighten the rest of humanity about our cultures. When we begin to understand the heights we have achieved in the past, and the many great obstacles we have overcome, we start to realize our true potential as a people. JC Senior, Justin St. Thomas, hosted the program, the National Black Anthem was sung by Brittni King, a JC Senior, a tribute to people of color was given via a slideshow, Nysherea Vereen (BJ Junior) and Brittni King performed personal poems, Theater students performed a play entitled "What Would the World Be Like Without Black People" revealing several inventions created by black people, a video to commemorate the importance of dreams rooted in Dr. King's "I have a Dream Speech" was shown, the message from Lakey Pryor, a JC Senior, was given entitled "If You Believe It, Work Hard At It, You Can Achieve It, and lastly our closing song was "The Greatest Love of All" by Clarissa Hall, a BJ Senior. A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots” (Marcus Garvey). We are the broad branches extending from the deep roots with bright futures.
