"If you were to ask some of teachers, what were there favorite moments with students, it's not going to be, my favorite moments with students were when we turned to page 109 and answered all of the odd questions" (Matt Miller). Therefore our primary focus for our retreat was to make learning more appealing for our students which connects with our school focus of connecting the curriculum to other content areas and real life settings to other content areas to promote retention and relevance. We did a series of activities related to what should learning look like, from Gatekeeper to Guides, Real Life Skills activity, 10 Tips for Creating a 21st Century Classroom Experience, SAMR Model, giving students control of their own learning and etc. What a great way to start the school year, determining and planning for implementation of 21st century skills and strategies that would best meet our students' needs. To start this process, teachers were assigned to rewrite their mission statements and teaching philosophies for the 21st century learners.
