Caleb League & Nicolas Davis, Bob Jones Seniors, and Deja Tascott, a James Clemens Senior, job shadowed at Horizon Medical Center, because they are interested in the health care field. Check out their personal experiences below:
"Today I went to Horizon Medical Clinic to shadow. I shadowed Nurses, Doctors, Radiologists, and the Lab Technicians. The nurse I shadowed mostly was named Pam. She showed me the basic fundamentals of being a nurse and the daily things you have to go through to keep a steady flow throughout the work day. Later on, the female doctor, whose name I can't recall, showed me how to use an EKG, and draw blood. An EKG is basically a machine that checks up on your heart rate and updates it into their system. After a while, the Dr. introduced me to the lab technician, who then brought me to his laboratory. In the lab, there are several machines that he uses in order to test and analyze people's blood. There is a machine that separates the red blood cells from the serum that makes your blood flow through your body. This machine spins for about ten minutes at a certain RPM. After the blood has been separated, he prints tags for the test tubes and labels them and puts them in a tray. The next machine he uses is to see how well your immune system is functioning. It tells you whether or not your body is fighting something off by showing you the white and red blood cell percentages. The third test was a urine sample, which is where the third machine comes into play. First, you dip a strip that has an assortment of colors on it into the urine. Then, you press a button that pulls the sample into the machine. After about a 5 minute wait, you check the computer that automatically pulls up a screen with many different boxes on it. Basically, if you see any red flags in the boxes, that's where your focus should be. If there are no red flags in any of the boxes, the patient is more than likely to be healthy. The male doctors didn't seem to be as communicative as the females, but I will say that they seemed very well educated and had a nice, friendly attitude. Through all of this, I have learned that people in today's society should be more friendly to their local doctors and nurses because it gets more stressful in there than you would think. Being a doctor has been on my mind for years now, and after this experience it has done more than just motivated me to try, I'm going to do it"- Caleb League, Bob Jones' Senior.
"Today was interesting: I shadowed Nurse Webster and Nurse Rene! They showed how me to document patients' visits when they leave, how to draw blood and conduct an EKG. I helped put the monitors on the patients to do the EKG and learned how to label the blood work. They also talked to me about teamwork and how important it is to have good teamwork or you wont be able to get the job done along with all the rules and regulations in the health care field. I observed that nurses stand all day and do a lot of back in forth activities from room to room. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience and look forward to going into the health care field" (Deja Tabscott, James Clemens' Senior).
